"learning should be based on direct experience , practical activities and exploration of an area in contrast to their local environment"
( Key Stage 1 )
In Science too , there are many opportunities to use the canal environment as a starting point for learning.
Consider, for example, the mechanics of locks, the diversity and abundance of wildlife, which is readily visible, map making, water conservation and pollution.
EDUCATION
The usefulness and relevance of a trip on the canals to Key Stages of the National Curriculum cannot be ignored or overstated.
For example, in Key Stage 1 History,
..."develop an awareness of the past and the way it was different from the present"
Pupils can compare the useage of canals past and present and how their construction methods differ from those of modern roads.
Other aspects such as dress, modes of living, and the expansion of trade and industry in the 18th and 19th centuries can also be included.

We at LNBP passionately believe that the canals are a wonderful resource and environment for children to learn, develop socially, and appreciate the wider world around them.
What is more, as far as teachers and group leaders are concerned, we think one of the most valuable things we offer is our skipper.
In addition to being a mine of information, he or she will look after the safe running of your boat, leaving you to concentrate, without distraction, on the needs of your individual group members and running the activities you have planned.
